Why an MPA instead of an MBA?
The Public sector is significantly different from the Private sector of business. Different motivations: one pursues profit and wealth, one pursues service. One values prosperity and economic success, the other values the promotion of human welfare. One is more individually and organizationally focused while the other is more community or collectively focused. The different programs possess significantly different accounting programs and accountability processes. Each program has significantly different laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures managing their respective operational processes. Leadership in either field requires specific skill sets within their respective field. The MPA is designed for those working in the Public sector.
How long does it take to complete the Master of Public Administration program?
The program is designed for working professionals to complete their master’s degree within 18-20 months. Most classes are 6 weeks in length, meeting one night a week from 5:30-9:30 in conjunction with a weekly learning team meeting (minimum of 2 hours per week).
What are learning teams?
Learning teams are organized during your first official class meeting in which you choose several students in your class to work together completing weekly classroom assignments.
Are learning teams mandatory?
Yes, learning teams are mandatory allowing you to work collaboratively with other students of different educational and cultural backgrounds. It offers leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills that are necessary for today’s leaders.
What happens if I miss a class meeting?
After one absence or three tardies you are in jeopardy of receiving an F and being dropped from a class unless prior arrangements have been made with the professor. We know that extenuating circumstances occur, so be sure to notify your professor as far ahead as possible for any anticipated absence or as soon as possible after any class is missed.
Who is eligible for the Certified Public Manager and Certified Supervisory Manager Scholarship?
The CPS/CSM scholarship is available for all students who have completed either or both courses and have received a certificate of completion. This scholarship provides a 10% discount and allows the student to waive 3 to 6 hours depending on the certification. A copy of the qualifying certificate must be submitted to the admission office. This discount cannot be taken with any other discount given by the school.
Do I have to take two classes, or can I take only one class (3hours) a semester?
Yes, however you cannot receive Federal Student Loans for less than 6 hours per semester.
Can I take 12 hours a semester?
Students are advised not to take more than 6 hours a semester. Should you desire to take additional hours please contact your advisor.
Is financial aid available for graduate students?
Most graduate students are eligible for financial aid in the form of Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Student Loans only. Students receiving Stafford Loans must be registered for a minimum of 6 hours per semester.
Does this program have rolling admission?
No, not in the truest sense. The program is comprised of cohorts. New students can join a cohort in the first, second or third class. After the third class, students must wait for a new cohort to begin.
What happens if I decide to withdraw or drop a course?
Contact the Office of Admission and Enrollment Services at 601-968-8947. Please note: A failure to attend class after you register does not drop you from the course.
Is a military discount available?
Yes, active and retired military can receive 20% off tuition by providing a copy of current orders or a DD-214. This discount cannot be combined with any other discount given by the school.
